Welcome to Chateau Montaiguillon

A Family Business

It was in 1949 that maternal great-grandfather Abel Rigou, wine producer and distiller near Montguyon, bought Montaiguillon.

His daughter, Geneviève, married Roger Amart. The pair dedicate their lives to transforming their new found home. Understanding the vital importance of selling wine in bottles, pioneer Roger Amart went to Belgium to find customers in the 1950s. Indeed, it would become Montaiguillon’s largest market over the next 40 years. Strong relationships were also formed with customers all over France, such as in the Rhone-Alpes region, or Charente Maritime.

Chantal and Monique, Roger and Geneviève’s daughters, became the third generation to ensure Chateau Montaiguillon’s continuity. The early 2000s were a defining moment in the Chateau’s history, as international sales were developing rapidly. In Europe, the loyal Belgian customer base gave the Chateau a great reputation. Year after year, Luxembourg and the UK also gradually became proud ambassadors of Montaiguillon.

The Chateau’s history was further marked by two fateful encounters. Chantal met Jacques and Andrée Balthazard, with whom she developed a friendship. Montaiguillon is hence represented in Quebec, where the Balthazard family now promotes its wine year after year. Marc Brugalière, Chantal’s friend from university, embarks on a mission to send the wines to China.

During the 2016 harvest, Chantal fell suddenly ill and died prematurely a few months later. It is her son Mathieu, supported by his cousin Oliver, who today carries Montaiguillon into its fourth generation. Through traditional practices, historical vinification methods, and significant commercial relationships, they perpetuate the Chateau’s essence over 70 years later. As motivated as ever by the quest for quality and the progressive adaptation to the challenges of their times, this family of wine producers has shown its grit and passion while expanding to international horizons and modernising the cultivation of the vineyard.
